the long slumber ends
hey there, long time no see ppl.. am sure u've stopped coming to this page after all these 2 months of silence.. apologies..
anyways.. i know i promised to write about the trip boon, anna and sarah had here.. and my memories of those 2 brilliant weeks i had showing them around..
in the process of which i went to rajasthan!! what a wonderful place, super hospitable and warm ppl, here are some memories from those 4 days!
vivid images of those women on the roadside in colorful clothes fluttering against the desert wind.. carrying water, or hay..
the rickety bus for the ass smackin' bumpy ride from jaisalmer to jodhpur with the sound of the c grade bollywood films soundtracks from the speaker, as someone like anna and sarah managed to sleep with that as well!!
the innumerable times anna had lassi..
the grandiosity of the mehrangarh fort, as well as the jaisalmer fort..
the lunch in a house in one of the thousands small lanes inside the jaisalmer fort featuring the bhaang lassi, dumbcharades and the chinese games (at which i suck real bad)
shopping at jaipur's bapu bazaar
chokhi dhaani experience.. the jalebi being the part i enjoyed the most.. besides the royal treatment at the buffet dinner.
jai niwas, hotel payal, and hotel utsav
the night train from jodhpur to jaisalmer, and my experience buying the tickets in the afternoon!
the camel safari, sunset, jumping off the sanddunes
the famous sarah jump..
the autorickshaw rides.. esp when it was deciding on whose turn it is to sit on the wooden ledge..
and lastly who wud sit with winky in the front and not sleep.. (anna obviously didnt count as she dozed off the moment the ignition was turned on!!!)
all in all, barring the sickness in the last few days, it was a memorable trip for me.. am sure they enjoyed as well.. right? taj mahal is due..
anyways, so much happened in the past 2 + months that i havent blogged.. i'll just go thru some highlights..
exam fever! major sickness.. i was stuck like never before.. i became a dumbass boyfriend, who never called, i was this nerd wanna be, and considering the way exams went, it was such a failure!!
the stress just kept piling up like crazy.. poonam was very supportive indeed.. esp coming down to ntu so many times!! but thankfully those friggin exams are over!!
i watched some movies, and read a couple of books.. of which hazaron khwahishein aisi (the film) and Q&A (the book), really struck me.. the film was a masterpiece, made with such perfection, with attention paid to minute details! shows the situation in 70s India.. before emergency and during that.. the 3 protaganists and their different ideologies.. the performances by kay kay, shiny and chitrangda (absolutely stunning, a sheer delight to watch).. all in all it goes down as one of the most well made movie coming outta indian cinema.. the book on the other hand was something i got hold of from nowhere, by this diplomat dude called vikas swarup.. its fiction that portrays a lot of relaities.. hard ones.. cruel ones that are prevalant in our country..from the life in slums, to chawls, to bollywood craze, to high socity parties, to incest, to rape, to deceit and corruption, its a small but brilliant read.. i must recommend..
exams came, and went.. some were really bad, some were better than expected.. the excitement of going back home kept me alive.. and kicking!
caught the 25th afternoon flight to back home! dilli meri jaan! the winters and the weddings welcomed me with open arms.. my mamu and my second cousin's wedding happened to fall on the same day.. so i was in a dilemma.. in the end attended my mamu's and what a blast.. details in a minute..
after arriving.. i shopped and shopped.. winter clothes, wedding suits, shirts, and what not..
met a couple of friends..
there were weddings on the 26th (2 of them!), 29th, 30th.. i was running everywhere... trying the ever so awesome wedding food and dancing bhangra.. the food at the fucntion on 30th deserves a special mention.. i just went to that wedding last moment.. it was the best decision i made after a long time.. lemme give u a brief detail..
chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, chiken burra, tangri, agfhani chickem, malai tikka, chicken sausages, mutton tikka, chicken in some weird sauce, chicken cooked chinese style, fish tikka, fried fish, fried chicken, pompheret, paneer tikka, mushroom fried, veg cutlets, little samosas, gol gappe with 3 different waters, bhalla paapdi, dosa, kaju kishmish chaat, aloo tikki, paneer tikki, besan poora, fruit chaat, baked snacks, salad bar, steamed corn, pizza slices, pakodas.. trust me.. these are the starters i had.. there were sooo many more!!!
now the main course.. salad (some 30 plates of differnt stuff), italian (with live pasta), mongolian food, amritsari food (chhole, kulche, aloo methi), biryanis (chicken, mutton, veg), butter chicken, chicken lababdar, chicken chettinad, chicken methi, prawns fried right there for u, chicken in red wine (that was yum!), two tawas for chicken and mutton separately.. fetauring kalejis, and seekhs, and gurdas and brain and what not.. this is only the non veg stuff.. in veg there was some 10 dishes.. paneer, dal, koftas, korma, kadhi, chhole, rajma and so on.. the breads had everything i think exists.. roomali, garam fulka, tandoori, missi roti, kulcha, naan, parantha and so on..
the desserts.. phew.. so unfair!! i was like bursting by then..
gulab jamun, jalebi, imarati with rabdi, mal pua with kheer, phirni, litchi something, gajar halwa, moong halwa, kulfi falooda, rasgulla, rajbhog, rasmalai, some 12 cakes and puddings on the table, ice cream by nirulas with special banana split being made right there.. hot pista milk! mouth freshner also!
last but not the least, there was paan!!! and some 20 kinds of supaari bowls right in front.. and candies..
I made sure i go to the host uncle and thank him! he was pretty happy that i loved the food.. LOVED? i wanted to go back home, freshen up, come back again in other clothes and attack the food again.. its not just the quantity.. the quality was awesome.. all the things listed above, except the banana split were first class.. its a pity that not many ppl turned up at the place, coz of cold, and so many weddings in that period of time.. i point and laugh at them.. all in all, one of the best catering ever!
next came up mamu's wedding celebrations.. started on 1st.. with kirtan.. the next 4 days were a ride.. i was on my toes, all the time.. working in the daytime for arrangements, and dancing and hogging at nights.. dancing was the best part.. and i did a lot of that.. esp on the wedding day, ppl had to actually drag me from the floor, to make my feet stop grooving.. my new hairdo got mixed responces, with ppl having no fashion sense criticising me, and others were praising it.. i love my new hairdo!!! and it went so well with all my 3 suits.. my appointment at saloon was at the same time as the groom, and i took as much time as he did, and never ever have i spent so much money in one saloon sitting. hehe.. almost 4 digits, if not for the discount.. but didnt even trim my hair, the new outta bed look is rocking! the last night was soooo much fun.. i can easily say, these 4 days are counted as one of the best i had in my life.. meeting relatives, being the centre of attraction, harmless flirting, dancing in the baraat, getting drunk at the wedding, my brown suit with the orange flashy shirt, my consistent dancing, the punjabi folk songs, the teasings, the taking pangas with the bride's side, going to their place with the dhol after midnight of the wedding eve and making loads of noise, generally shouting a lot.. teasing mamu like crazy, learning new dance moves from cousins, the flashy clothes, the gold around, everyone looking beautiful in those heavy sarees and lehngas, the little ceremonies, extracting money from elders, driving around doing errands, the brilliant brilliant food! the staying up all night for pheras..
but nothing comes for free, and i had to pay the price.. from 5th onwards.. i cudnt get up from the bed for 3 days.. even if i do, i had to walk around while dancing.. the cold, cough have just worsened it.. but, no regrets, i had fun, and loads of it!
i started driving!! like mad.. and that has its disadvantages, now am the new unpaid driver of the house.. who is used to run errands, buy stuff, take ppl to docs, to temples, to boutiques.. this is crazy.. but am loving it! even drove our new tavera.. i tell u, driving in delhi is no less than an adventure sport.. gives u such a rush..
arjun was in delhi touring north india.. so i picked him and his bro from their hotel, to drive them around, we ended up at south delhi, priya's.. had coffee, roamed around, also lost our way! i bought books! and more books! like 3 of them.. later we picked his parents up from the hotel and brought them to my place, where we had a nice dinner.. was really nice having his family over..
anyways, about the books i bought.
1. shantaram, been itching to get hold of it for the longest time.. finally did.. its a 1000 page book, sounds really interesting.. soon to be made into a film with johnny depp playing the lead.. this australian dude who breaks from his prison, and escapes to india, where he lives at the mumbai slums, learns marathi and hindi, falls in love, works in bollywood films as extras, and finally joins the underworld of mumbai.. its an autobiography of the author. so a real life story..
2. five point someone- the book am reading now.. about what not to do at IIT, basically its a hilarious story of three guys in india's most elite engineering college.. they sound just like us!!! really.. slackers of the worst kinds.. its something i can really relate to.. they get bad grades, they study in the end, they are fat, they procrastinate, they break rules, they wanna change the world!
3. a night @ call center.. the one i finished last night itself.. a weird book, by the same author as five point someone.. i mean its contemporary, funny mostly, the characters look real.. but the story doesnt!! its provoking i guess, but in the strangest of ways.. overall something out of the box.. found it hard to digest..
thats all for now folks, me driving to punjab in the morning for yet another wedding of another second cousin.. will return on monday and try blog more.. about life in general.. hehe.. cheers!
